If you’ve welcomed home an 8- or 9-week-old puppy, you may hear that you shouldn’t let him go outside until he’s had all his shots. You might even hear this from someone you consider an expert, like a veterinarian, breeder, or other pet professional. Frankly, this is outdated advice. What we accepted about dogs decades ago is not the same as today, because we understand more about canine development.
Experts in canine behavior are going to tell you to get your puppy socialized as soon as possible, before your puppy reaches 12 weeks of age. If you don’t, your puppy could grow up to be fearful or aggressive. The chances of your puppy being damaged from lack of socialization is far greater than the risk of disease. If you wait until he’s had all his vaccinations, typically around 16 weeks, you’re already too late.
Socialization is exposing your young puppy to different environments, people, sights, sounds, and animals in a positive manner, so that he has a great time each time.

- The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior - “… it should be the standard of care for puppies to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated.”
- The American Animal Hospital Association - “… there is no medical reason to delay puppy classes or social exposure until the vaccination series is completed as long as exposure to sick animals is prohibited, basic hygiene is practiced, and diets are high in quality.”
- Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) (this is the largest association of dog trainers in the world, founded by Dr. Ian Dunbar).
